Group work at a workshop with over 70 people now reached through peer training.
Women in polygamous households discussing their empowerment maps showing their co-wives and discussing strategies for women in a household working together to further their property rights and increase incomes so that the whole family will benefit. Rather than the current situation where co-wives are always in competition and spending much of their time trying to get whatever they can at the expense of each other - which means the men just want to run away rather than face up to the quarrels etc and drink even more.
Shows participant drawing her contribution to the current situation circle of the new design of Road Journey.
While people are drawing on the collective road participants also draw their own roads with pencils and pens in simple exercise books they have bought. They then keep these updated at home and bring them back to meetings and further workshops.
Ambrose - 6 months ago a staunch defender even of domestic violence to keep his wife under control never mind his right to control all land and income from coffee - would make such a momentous commitment to go back and promote making a joint land ownership agreement with his wife on the basis of what he had learned.
Because of the GALS methodology Faith and Kabuke have really started to work together and built this very successful shop from nothing in a couple of years. They are now sending their children to school. And now very much in love - they have a joint land agreement and discuss all finances together and have plans to use some of their profits to build a very large double bed and make their bedroom really nice so they can enjoy their physical relationship together - this now being a trend they have started being followed by some other members.
Felizia was very poor before she started amd now has a thriving business using the GALS methodology.
Mary has set up a butcher’s business - very profitable but usually the preserve of men.
Roger and Constance are discussing the new version of the empowerment map tool which also maps the peer sharing process. Roger, like Ambrose, started off in February fully supporting domestic violence to keep his wife in check and his right to have full ownership of all the coffee land and income. But now he has a joint land agreement with his wife and they are discussing everything and they are now very much happier together. He has already shared his ideas with 30 of his neighbours and helped them to change also. Constance also started off in February supporting the idea that women should be completely subservient to her husband, but now has her own business and her family is much better off.
